This is the perfect point to start - by getting yourself an experienced Chinese tutor! I have developed my own way of teaching, based on reasoning and rationality ... because it's much easier to remember Chinese when you understand the Chinese! I have an excellent textbook for you to use on class as well as for home revision. We'll have a lot of conversation to practice pronunciation, which you can never get enough from the traditional language schools or online classes.

We are specialized in small group class (4ppl or less per class), with creative, flexible, productive and systematic teaching methods. When it comes to learning a new language, traditional large classes simply don’t work because you will need a lot of support on pronunciation, grammar and understanding of the different culture. We believe in quality more than quantity, and our goal is to provide the most desirable Chinese language course in Adelaide.

I'm originally from China and have been living in different countries after my high school. My current job allows me to work on casual base. So I'm thinking of doing some good for my culture by promoting Chinese language to more people who are interested in Chinese culture.

I used to do private tuition but I find that group class works much better than private. Therefore I don't do private class anymore.

Mandarin Group Lesson (2-4 ppl / class) in Adelaide

Quality is more than quantity!

It is so important to learn a new language with a lot of help on pronunciation and explanation -- a large class doesn't work!

The advantage of studying in a pair is that you will get strategies and methods, as well as support and encouragement from each other.

Small group class consists 2-4 students with fixed time each week. The fee is $20 per person per one-hour class (usually one-hour /week is enough as you'll need to study by yourself after class).

You are encouraged to find someone to start the group class with you. Otherwise, you might need to wait for a couple weeks till we find another student to join your class. (I'm not a full-time tutor, and sometimes it takes time to find someone interested and committed in Mandarin in Adelaide).

Before and after each class:

We believe in adult-learning: efficient and intensive study on class and self-preparation/revision at home.

You'll get the handouts for the each class a week before.

After each class, I'll email you the list of 'things to prepare for the next class', which is a small amount of exercise to reinforce what you have learned from the class.

Learning Chinese is not that difficult, as long as you have a good tutor who can study with you creatively and productively :-)

What my students say about the classes:

9 years ago I started doing business in Chinese speaking countries and visiting suppliers in these countries. I thought after the 3rd year I was pretty smart when I said 'knee how show ger' to a young lady. I was told in no certain terms that I should learn Mandarin because I spoke terribly.

Returning to Sydney I enrolled in night school. This was difficult to get to classes in the city at 7pm but I persevered for the 8 weeks course. At the end of the course I had a slightly larger vocabulary and could say a few sentences but with no confidence. I still travel to Asia and get a few laughs every time I open my mouth.

I saw Shiyun's advertisement and have now had 8 classes. I learned more after 2 classes than I did in a complete night school course. Shiyun doesn't laugh at my mistakes which are numerous. She simply corrects me and makes me repeat it until I get it right. She tests me to ensure I remember what I have been taught, and prepares exciting classes to broaden my understanding. Additionally she is very pleasant to spend time with and I look forward to my weekly lesson. My only regret is that I do not have the available time to take a lesson every night.

I highly recommend Shiyun's classes for anyone wanting to learn Mandarin.

Shiyun is a great Mandarin teacher, positive, encouraging and organised. She genuinely seems to enjoy teaching and, although she is very patient, she also makes sure to challenge you. For instance, no matter how much difficulty I would sometimes have understanding Mandarin, Shiyun would only speak English to me when she was sure I couldn't understand the various versions of what she was saying in Mandarin. Although I insisted on making the lessons relatively informal by not having a textbook, she very deftly found ways to get me speaking, listening, reading and writing Mandarin, all in the context of highly sociable conversations. I would definitely recommend Shiyun as a terrific Mandarin teacher for students at a wide variety of levels.
